How to draw rain
Yes, it's raining again. It's been a wet winter, and it's tempting to put off most things until the weather improves. But drawing - like fitness, sleeping and eating - can't wait. So let's explore how we might enjoy the bad weather, by appreciating the beauty of rain: the softness of the light and mist and dove greys, the reflections in the puddles, the glossy streets at night.
Don't be afraid to draw in the rain. Drawing from life makes your work original. Just use waterproof ink!
I sometimes start by looking at inspiring models - a bit like talking to a knowledgeable friend. You don't need a live teacher. Just Google 'Japanese prints, rain'. You'll see many examples, such as this:
The key thing is look at the slant of the rain. Most of the time, rain (and snow) falls at a slant, at an angle. This creates a more dynamic image.
Also look a the range of greys, and the opposing angles of the figures with their umbrellas, and the curtain of rain.
So, let it rain. Rain is a beautiful subject for drawing. And will keep you happy during the hot, dry days of summer when you are missing that refreshing, fine spray of cool water across your face.
